i. Brigham Young University–Hawaii's information governance program seeks to comply with the numerous statutes and regulations that govern acquisition, access, retention, archive, and disposal of records and information maintained by the university. BYU–Hawaii has adopted a general retention schedule that contains a list of record categories and relevant time periods that govern when records must either be destroyed or retained to comply with statutory, regulatory, or other legal requirements or risks, including relevant statutes of limitation.
In seeking to balance and protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data, BYU–Hawaii faces significant risks in the areas of information security and privacy. Information security involves prevention against and management of unauthorized access, acquisition, and use of any nonpublic data. In contrast, information privacy concerns the appropriate collection and use of personal data and focuses on individual rights. Numerous laws and standards govern the security and privacy of data collected, protected, and used by the university such as student data, financial data, health data, and research data. The university's information security and privacy efforts involve significant coordination and cooperation among IT, legal, compliance, and other campus operations.
A variety of laws govern telecommunications activities. In particular, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable in the United States. The university must comply with applicable communications laws, including telemarketing rules.
