What is Compliance?
"We are a law-abiding people. We believe in obedience to the law. We sustain the law."
Building a Culture of Trust and Integrity through Compliance
Compliance is not only about rules, but is about living our values. At BYU–Hawaii, compliance is about fostering a culture of integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct across our campus community. We encourage all members of the BYU–Hawaii community to reflect a true culture of compliance, which entails:
- Integrity in all academic and professional activities
- Accountability in fulfilling responsibilities
- Respect for laws, policies, and ethical standards
- Commitment to protecting the university community and its mission
By doing so, we strengthen trust, protect our mission to help all entities and individuals involved understand and comply with laws, prevent and detect violations of law, and promote a culture of ethical conduct within our community.
The Office of Compliance & Ethics
The Office of Compliance & Ethics, led by the university’s chief compliance officer, oversees and coordinates BYU–Hawaii’s overall compliance and ethics program. At its core, compliance means conforming to laws, regulations, standards, and policies. Our mission is to help the university remain true to both its legal obligations and its moral values by:
- Assessing risks to the university and developing strategies to reduce them.
- Communicating compliance requirements clearly and consistently to stakeholders.
- Providing counsel and guidance for departments to build effective compliance practices.
- Monitoring emerging laws and regulations and analyzing their applicability to the university.
- Managing a confidential compliance hotline for reporting concerns safely and anonymously.
Although the Office of Compliance & Ethics provides central coordination, compliance at BYU–Hawaii is a shared effort. Each department, manager, and worker share responsibility for upholding the regulations to which the university is subject.
