What is Compliance?

"We are a law-abiding people. We believe in obedience to the law. We sustain the law."
Gordon B. Hinkley

At its core, compliance means conforming to laws, regulations, standards, and policies. At BYU–Hawaii, compliance is more than simply following rules, but it is about fostering a culture of integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct across our campus community.

All stakeholders, including faculty, staff, student employees, and students, share responsibility for upholding the regulations to which the university is subject.

The Office of Compliance & Ethics

The Office of Compliance & Ethics, Led by the university’s chief compliance officer, oversees and coordinates BYU–Hawaii’s overall compliance and ethics program. Our mission is to help the university remain true to both its legal obligations and its moral values by:

  • Assessing risks and developing strategies to reduce them.
  • Communicating compliance requirements clearly and consistently
  • Facilitating meetings and task forces on campus-wide compliance issues.
  • Developing tools to measure compliance with specific laws and standards.
  • Providing training programs for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Monitoring emerging laws and regulations and analyzing their applicability to the university.
  • Managing a confidential compliance hotline for reporting concerns safely and anonymously.
  • Creating templates and guidance for departments to build effective compliance practices.

Shared Responsibility and Accountability

Although the Office of Compliance & Ethics provides central coordination, compliance at BYU–Hawaii is a shared effort. Each department, manager, and worker is responsible for implementing and upholding compliance policies and practices within their areas. When compliance is approached in a distributed way, it is not merely a ‘check-the-box’ exercise, but becomes part of daily decision-making and professional practice across campus.

Building a Culture of Compliance

Compliance is not only about rules, but is about living our values. We encourage all members of the BYU–Hawaii community to reflect a true culture of compliance, which entails:

  • Integrity in all academic and professional activities
  • Accountability in fulfilling responsibilities
  • Respect for laws, policies, and ethical standards
  • Commitment to protecting the university community and its mission

At BYU–Hawaii, we strive to inspire our community to uphold the spirit and the letter of the law. By doing so, we strengthen trust, protect our mission to help all entities and individuals involved understand and comply with laws, prevent and detect violations of law, and to promote a culture of ethical business conduct.
